Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Collects 107,819 Pounds for Food Gatherers

by Bank of Ann Arbor May 17, 2012 4:06
Ann Arbor, MI May 15, 2012 ― Washtenaw County letter carriers were seeing orange this past Saturday as they collected thousands of orange shopping bags filled with non-perishable food items as part of the annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the National Rural Letter Carriers (NRLCA) Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. The orange bags provided by Food Gatherers, United Way of Washtenaw County and Bank of Ann Arbor, were delivered by letter carriers to homes across the county as a reminder to participate in the drive. The result, a record breaking 107,819 pounds of food, was collected for Food Gatherers, a nearly 200% increase over the previous year’s drive.

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive, held on the second Saturday in May, has become the nation’s largest single-day food drive benefitting Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. Now in its 20th year, the annual food drive has grown from a regional to a national effort that provides assistance to the millions of Americans struggling to put food on the table. This year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive broke Washtenaw County’s record which was 75,031 pounds in 2008.

“The City Letter Carriers of the National Association of Letter Carriers, Br 434 and the Rural Letter Carriers of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association would like thank everyone who donated food to make our Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive in Washtenaw County a huge success.  We are overwhelmed by your generosity,” said Bill Dawson, President NALC Branch 434. “Many thanks to Food Gatherers and to the United Way for their efforts in getting the word out about the annual food drive, and to Bank of Ann Arbor for supplying the bags which you all so generously filled.”

The need for food assistance exists in every community in America, no matter how rich or poor. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s annual study measuring food security in the United States, the number of Americans living in food insecure homes reached nearly 49 million in 2011 (the most recent year that such data is available). In Washtenaw County, 1 in 7 individuals – and an alarming 1 in 6 children – are at risk of hunger.

Shopping bags provided by Food Gatherers, the United Way of Washtenaw County and Bank of Ann Arbor were part of a new initiative to remind residents to participate in the drive. The shopping bags included messaging for United Way 2-1-1, a referral line for individuals seeking information about and referrals to human services such as emergency food assistance, senior care services, mortgage foreclosure assistance, and housing and utility resources.

ICBA Honors Bank of Ann Arbor and Others for Outstanding Community Service

by Bank of Ann Arbor March 18, 2012 6:11

Nashville, Tenn. (March 14, 2012)—The Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) today honored three community banks that have demonstrated outstanding customer service with the 2012 ICBA National Community Bank Service Awards. The three community bank award recipients were announced during ICBA’s 2012 National Convention and Techworld® in Nashville, Tenn. The ICBA National Community Bank Service Awards bring national recognition to the unparalleled contributions community banks make to help build sustainable communities. The awards are given annually to community banks that show longstanding commitments to community outreach and development.

“ICBA founded the National Community Bank Service Awards program to help celebrate the outstanding volunteer efforts of the nation’s community banks, which exist to serve the needs of their customers and communities each and every day,” said incoming ICBA Chairman Jeffrey L. Gerhart, chairman of Bank of Newman Grove, Newman Grove, Neb. “This year’s award recipients exemplify what community bank service is all about. We commend them for giving their time, expertise and resources to better their communities and the lives of local residents.”

ICBA is pleased to honor the following community banks with the 2012 ICBA National Community Bank Service Awards:

Grand National Award:

  • Wyoming Bank & Trust in Cheyenne, Wyo.

National Award:

  • For banks with assets over $500 million: Bank of Ann Arbor in Ann Arbor, Mich.
  • For banks with assets under $500 million: Bryant State Bank in Bryant, S.D.

Honorable Mentions:

  • The Bank of Oswego in Lake Oswego, Ore.
  • Northeast Community Bank in White Plains, N.Y.
  • First State Bank of Joplin in Joplin, Mo.
  • Bankers Trust in Des Moines, Iowa.
  • Village Bank in Midlothian, Va.
  • Katahdin Trust Company in Houlton, Maine.

As the Grand National award recipient, Wyoming Bank & Trust is being recognized for its “Honor Flight Wyoming” program, which was launched in 2008 for the purpose of getting local World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., so they could see the new World War II memorial. The organization has had six flights from Wyoming and raised more than $626,000 from private donors, which has resulted in flying 679 World War II veterans and 358 Guardians and staff to Washington, D.C. Tom Bass, president of the Wyoming Bank & Trust, is a vice president of the Honor Flight Wyoming organization and one of its founding board members. Wyoming Bank & Trust also participates in several other community service projects throughout the year, including lining the streets of Cheyenne with American flags during the fourth of July and sponsoring an annual coat drive called “Warm Up Wyoming.”

Bank of Ann Arbor was named as a National Award recipient in recognition of its “Sweet 15” social media charity campaign. To commemorate the bank’s 15th birthday, “Sweet 15” mobilized the power of social media by attracting 17,000 people to direct $75,000 of the bank’s money to 15 local nonprofit organizations. During the campaign, the bank’s Facebook page gained over 16,000 new “likes” and created over 3.5 million impressions, which created significant awareness for local nonprofits. President and CEO Timothy Marshall threw his wholehearted support into the effort, encouraging all employees and friends to join the campaign. The enthusiasm and passion displayed by the community for the local nonprofits was overwhelming and benefited local nonprofits, such as Humane Society of Huron Valley, Down Syndrome Support Team, Friends of Fiddlers Restrung, the Neutral Zone and many more.

Bryant State Bank was named as a National Award recipient in recognition of its community development program. As Bryant, S.D.’s largest full-time employer, WW Tire, a tire retail, wholesale and recapping manufacturing company, faced a dilemma: the company had outgrown its facilities and needed to expand, but there were no suitable building sites in the community that had both the space and the infrastructure to meet the needs of the expanding business. The business began to explore options of moving the expansion to a larger community outside the area, which would have a devastating impact on the community. This is when President Jeff Davis, President and Chairman Lee Jacobson, of Bryant State Bank stepped in. Instead of letting opportunities go elsewhere, Bryant State Bank’s donation of more than 200 hours and over 40 percent staff involvement expanded job opportunities, increased public funds and enhanced the community for generations to come. In addition, the project facilitated future growth opportunities for another business, and building plans are underway.

Tim Marshall Appointed to Federal Reserve Bank Council

by Bank of Ann Arbor July 25, 2011 11:05

July 25, 2011 – Bank of Ann Arbor is pleased to announce that it’s President and CEO, Timothy G. Marshall, has been appointed to the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s 2011 Community Depository Institution Advisory Council (CDIAC). Marshall will serve as the sole community banker representing the State of Michigan

The CDIAC provides an avenue for the Federal Reserve Bank to learn more about specific financial sectors throughout the Seventh Federal Reserve District, which encompasses Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa. Further, CDIAC meetings are intended to provide an opportunity for council members to discuss their concerns and views on economic, financial, and regulatory matters with key decision makers.

“It’s an honor to be asked by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago to serve in this capacity as a representative for all of the Michigan based community banks,” explained Tim Marshall. “It’s a positive reflection on the strong financial performance of Bank of Ann Arbor during the most recent economic downturn as well as the importance of the Ann Arbor region to the economic vitality of our state.”

Council members serve staggered terms lasting up to three years and meet twice annually to provide their views on current business and economic conditions to Chicago Fed President Charles Evans and other senior officials of the Federal Reserve Bank. Input from Council members on regional banking conditions helps contribute to the Federal Reserve System's formulation of national supervisory and monetary policy.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago is one of 12 regional Reserve Banks across the United States that, together with the Board of Governors in Washington, D.C., serves as the central bank for the United States. Congress created the Federal Reserve System in 1913, charging it with the responsibility to foster a sound banking system and a healthy economy. This remains the broad mission of the Fed and its component parts: the 12 Federal Reserve Banks nationwide that each serve a specific region of the country, and the Board of Governors in Washington, D.C., which is set up to oversee the Fed System.

Arbor Bancorp Announces 2010 Earnings

by Bank of Ann Arbor February 18, 2011 8:49

Ann Arbor, Michigan, February 18, 2011 – Timothy G. Marshall, President and CEO of Arbor Bancorp, Inc. the parent company of Bank of Ann Arbor announced the following year end results for 2010.

Net income was $5.1 million, or $5.90 per share, for the twelve months ended December 31, 2010, improving from $1.8 million, or $2.15 per share, for the same period of 2009. Total assets of the bank were $689 million, up 27% from $542 million in 2009.

The strong asset growth and earnings improvement was driven by the successful acquisition of the former New Liberty Bank in Plymouth, continued growth in the existing core markets of Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and neighboring Washtenaw County communities, and improving credit quality trends.

“Due to our strong performance throughout this downturn, Bank of Ann Arbor is well positioned to continue to support our communities and work closely with all of our existing and prospective clients, some of whom need our assistance and patience during these challenging times”, commented Marshall. “We continued to strengthen our balance sheet and capital position in 2010 which will enable us to maintain our strong commitment to helping the families, businesses, and communities we serve, as we have since the inception of the bank in 1996.”

As the most recent 2010 comparative FDIC report shows, Bank of Ann Arbor continues to materially outperform other banks in Michigan and the U.S. in key loan quality metrics. As for earnings, return on shareholder equity was 12.1%, substantially better than the Michigan bank average, which for the third straight year will be a negative number.
